Harness the Magic of Mentoring
Marla came out of college with high aspirations
and a lot of talent. She took a job at a large
firm in her home town, and while she did well
by most standards, she wasn’t pleased with
her progress. She wasn’t getting the promotions
and new projects she thought she deserved. She
was observant enough to know that she wasn’t
being treated unfairly, she just didn’t
have everything she needed. Unfortunately, she
just didn’t know what was missing.
Marla went back to her Alma Mater for Homecoming
that fall. She couldn’t believe it had been
five years. And after talking with Andy for awhile,
she couldn’t believe how well he was doing.
He had always been a good guy and pretty bright,
but she never thought he would be that much further
than her on the corporate ladder.
Before she left that weekend, Marla got Andy's
email address and started corresponding with him.
After a few weeks of emails and phone calls her
eyes opened to what she needed. Andy kept talking
about Susan, his mentor, and how much she had
helped him over the time since graduation.
Resolved to see if a mentor would help her the
way one had obviously helped Andy, Marla picked
his brain about how to find a mentor and set out
on that path.
The path eventually led her to seek out a relationship
with Jim, a well respected leader in his early
fifties. It didn’t take her long to find
out that having a mentor was what was missing.
Jim gave her advice and feedback. Jim listened
and provided a different perspective. Jim was
patient with her high expectations of herself…and
others.
Her career began to blossom, and perhaps just
as importantly, Marla began to seek out people
to mentor, just as Jim had mentored her.
Susan and Jim had mastered the art of mentoring,
and the results of their mastery bore fruit in
Andy and Marla (and many others).
If you want to become a more effective leader,
becoming a valued mentor is one way to achieve
that goal. Mentors, like leaders, don’t
have to come from a specific level on the organizational
chart or with a specific job title. Anyone
can become a more effective leader, and mentoring
others is part of what the best leaders do.
People like Susan and Jim know that the organization
succeeds when individuals are reaching their potential.
They also know that the influence and impact they
can have extends beyond the organization and its
goals because mentors can change lives.
Mentoring can help you leave your legacy.
